Usually there are eight musicians who each sing, introduce material verbally, and play ukuleles, though sometimes performances take place with seven performers. Hailed by The New York Times as “an oversized dose of unexpected hipness,” The "Ukulele Orchestra" uses the limitations of the ukulele to create a musical freedom as it reveals unsuspected musical insights. The orchestra consists of ukuleleators playing instruments in various registers: sopranino, soprano, concert, tenor, baritone, and bass. Going from Tchaikovsky to "Nirvana" via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks, the ensemble takes us on “a world tour with only hand luggage” and gives the listener “One Plucking Thing After Another.”

Since those humble beginnings back in 2008, the orchestra has now grown to 50 regular players of all ages and abilities, who perform voluntarily throughout the year for many and various audiences within the South Holland and Peterborough area. An ALL AGE, ALL ABILITY Ukulele club (and occasional performance group) based in North Devon. There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks, or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery only a revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing-and whistling.
